Assembling Material for the Oil Derrick

The Anna May Oil Company has made much progress the past week in its preliminary work for exploiting the Coalwood structure for oil. Contracts have been let for sawing and assembling the derrick lumber and delivering it on the ground at the R.M. Whicker homestead five miles south of Coalwood. Bob Lent is at present engaged in excavation and leveling off the ground at the chosen well site and soon will start work on a water well. On Wednesday about 9,000 feet of native lumber had been delivered on the ground and by the latter part of this week or the first of next week, the balance of the material for the 72-foot derrick will be on the ground. A space of approximately 100 by 150 feet is being leveled off now. A contract has been let for 17,000 feet of lumber to be cut by Joe Meyers at the John Cumber mill, four miles west of the well location. John Lemson at his Stacey mill is cutting 9,000 feet of big timbers, including one measuring 14 by 24 by 24 inches, taken from a tree 7 feet 10 inches in circumference, and another timber, 16 by 16 by 28 inches, taken from a tree 6 feet 8 inches in circumference. Another timber, an oak walking beam measuring 18 by 18 by 26 feet, is among the material at Miles City. The hauling of the native lumber to the well site started Wednesday.

John W. Powelson, president of the Anna May Oil Company, was expected to return tomorrow night from a ten days’ trip to Rochester, N.Y., and will be accompanied by an experienced rig builder. He had given instructions to have rig material on the ground for the builder to start work. During Mr. Powelson’s absence F.E. Beall of Miles City supervised operations for the company.
