Chrystal Mitchell, JH/HS Math Teacher, is pictured above.

Four teachers have taken on new roles with Broadus Schools this fall, including a JH/HS Math Teacher, a 4th Grade Teacher, a Shop Teacher, and a Title 1/8th Grade English Teacher. Filling those roles are a combination of experienced teachers and others just beginning their education careers. We sat down with the teachers to get to know them.

Chrystal Mitchell takes on the role of part time JH and HS Math Teacher this year, taking over for Michelle Wash. Chrystal has worked as a substitute teacher in Broadus for two years, and is currently working on her Education degree in Mathematics. She is hired under an emergency authorization, which allows Montana schools that aren't able to find fully licensed educators to hire non-licensed teachers. Statewide, the need for teachers is so acute that emergency hires rose from 23 schools in 2017 to 120 in 2021. Math Teachers in particular have been exceptionally difficult to find and recruit, especially into rural areas, per the Montana Office of Public Instruction.

Mitchell told us that she has always had a love of math, and has long wanted to be a teacher, growing up around other educators in her family.

Chrystal grew up in Arizona before graduating from High School in Oregon. There she met Levi Mitchell of Broadus, to whom she is married. Chrystal and Levi then moved to Broadus, where he is the Head of Maintenance for Broadus Schools. The couple has three children, Riley age 14, Colton, age 5, and Gaige, age 1.

Chrystal will teach 8th grade Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1, and is looking forward to the opportunity. She tells us that Math Teacher Eric Myers has been a big help, answering any questions she may have. Chrystal said she is happy to schedule appointments for any questions students or parents may have, and will make time to help her students succeed in the tough subject of math.
