Broadus IGA Puts Grant Money To Use

USDA Rural Development Business and Cooperatives Program Director Lad Barney joined with Broadus Foods (otherwise known as the Broadus IGA), Powder River County Commissioners, and the Southeastern Montana Development Council last Tuesday to illustrate how a $61,000 grant, awarded to Broadus Foods in 2020 was used to make energy efficiency improvements.

The funds, awarded through a USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency grant, were used to upgrade the coolers at the IGA, saving around 373,000 kWh annually, or enough energy to power 34 homes, per the USDA.

The cost savings and reduction in energy usage has allowed the Broadus IGA to continue to provide groceries and produce to Broadus and Powder River County, all while reducing pollution.
