Install Phone Line on Fence Posts

The people of the Upper B-Divide are strictly up to date, having started a telephone line in their community. The line is strung on fence posts a distance of ten or twelve miles, connecting the ranches of Fred Toman and Homer Canon, with Fred Helm and Joe Coulter tying on between. Others expect to tie on as soon as they can procure phones and the line will be extended whenever parties more distant care to put their fences in shape for the line and buy instruments.

Robert J. Buckley, an experienced telephone man, who is residing on his section homestead here this summer, has done much to encourage the line and has given up much of his time in getting it started.

As a meeting of the interested parties on September 11th, Fred Helm was elected secretary. It has been suggested that the new lines be known as the Bowers-Bay Horse telephone line. Mr. Buckley has expressed his willingness to assist any interested community in Powder River County in starting a neighborhood telephone line and calls attention to the fact that the only expense of such an undertaking would be the cost of a telephone which could be purchased secondhand in good condition for about one-half the price of a new instrument. Anyone interested may write to him at Bay Horse, Montana.

Grade School News

The Grade School has a new Philco radio and automatic phonograph. The phonograph plays 10 twelve inch records, or 12 ten inch records. During recess and the noon hour it is left out in the hall, and if any of the children wish they may listen to it during these periods.

The primary room uses it for its drills and folk dances and the upper classes seem to enjoy the news broadcasts.

There has also been a new basketball court added to the Grade School playgrounds and the boys seem to be making good use of it.

The Home Ec. Girls, with the help of their supervisor, Mrs. MacBride, and the janitors, Mr. Kane and Mr. Leff, have reconverted the lunch room into a quite nice kitchen, which will be used by the Home Ec. Class during the period that they are learning to cook.

Boyes Community to Celebrate 50th

Members of the Boyes Community Club invite their Powder River and Carter County friends to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of their organization, this Sunday, September 29, at the hall. The event will get underway with games for kids young and old, along with cards and homemade ice cream, at 2 p.m. Supper will follow at 6 o’clock.

The Club was first organized in 1946 with Barney WIndland as its first president. Meetings were held in area homes, and at the Boyes School, said present-day secretary Poppy Mills.

“In 1954, we borrowed $7,000 from the Powder River Bank with Charley Aldrich co-signing the note for us. The hall was then constructed by Johnny Stabio of Broadus,” said Poppy. We held dances every two weeks and put on plays to pay for the hall. Also card parties.

“Our club has hosted wedding and baby showers and benefits for people of the area. We also give a scholarship for a graduating senior every year,” Poppy continued. “We have hosted an Italian dinner at the hall since 1982, which is our yearly fundraiser. We also hosted a Swine Drive in 1989 to celebrate Montana’s 100 years. This event was held for five years.”

Surviving Charter members of the Club include Mary Barbero, Kay Giacometto, Lena Trucano, Lydia Capra, Erie Richards and Margaret Mills-Schmaus. Other current members include Harold “Junior” Draine, president, Kara Lambert, Vice President, and Poppy, secretary, along with Laura and Carol Lambert, Carole Barbero, Esther Borla, Sacha Draine, Cynde Trucano, Debbie Talcott, Kerry Garnder, Gloria Rosencranz, Louise Stradtman, Mary Dell Ellis, and Sylvia Landa.
