Which Montana college fans can donate the most amount of food to the Powder River County food bank? The Montana State University-Powder River County Extension Office is betting on Montana State Bobcat fans. Powder River County Attorney, Jeff Noble, is betting the University of Montana Griz fans will collect the most donations! The Brawl of the Wild has come to Powder River County. Which team, or county office, will win the food drive?

The Can the Griz or Can the Cats food drive began locally last Monday. It will conclude at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 18th, prior to the Brawl of the Wild football game between MSU and UM set for Saturday, Nov. 20th. Nonperishable food donations can be taken to the Powder River County Courthouse in Broadus.

Monetary donations may also be made directly to the Powder River County Senior Center. Each dollar counts as one pound of food. Bobcat supporters can add their contributions to MSU’s total by telling the food bank their donation is for Can the Griz. And, Griz fans can add their contributions to U of M’s total by telling the food bank their donation is for Can the Cats. Call the Senior Center at 436-2635 to make a cash donation.

Last year, MSU and Bobcat supporters donated 150,290 pounds of food and $252,893 to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank. Pounds and dollars are added together for the contest, which resulted in a total of 403,183 pounds for the Bozeman community. The Can the Cats food drive in Missoula brought in the equivalent of 671,707 pounds of food for the Missoula Food Bank. Bozeman and the MSU community have won the competition 17 out of the 21 years it has been held.

The Powder River Senior Center Food Bank wins no matter which fans raise the most donations. Rita Harden, Powder River Senior Center Director, said that cream of mushroom soup, vegetable soup, spaghetti sauce, and canned meats such as tuna and chicken are all excellent donations, and that all food donated should not be expired.
