Broadus Grad's Love Of Running Propels Her Forward In Career, Life

Mary Felig, maiden name Owen, originally from Hammond, ran in the 2021 Boston Marathon, finishing 77th out of 7,440 women in the race, and 863rd out of 15,382 overall.

Felig grew up in Carter County, daughter of Curt and Margo Owen, and graduated from Broadus in 2009. She has a long running career that helped her build up to her impressive performance in Boston.

She recently told us: "My history with competitive running really starts in junior high. I went to school out at Hawk's Home school in Carter County, but my mom would drive me into Broadus so I could still participate in sports with the kids there, and I really just fell in love with the sport. I kept running track through high school, and eventually that led to running cross country & track for MSU-Billings in college. Running has been a real constant in my life, and I feel like it keeps me grounded. I've made some wonderful friendships through running, and I've gotten to experience a lot of new places. For me, I suppose things have really come full-circle now too, because I am coaching cross country and track at Skyview, and it's really fun to be on the other side of things and get to watch young athletes learn and grow, and find their own passion for the sport."

In addition to her coaching duties, Mary is a math and physics teacher at Skyview in Billings. In college at MSU-B, Mary ran cross-country and track for four years. She was named an honoree to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track & Field All-American team four times-only the eighth woman in GNAC history and the first from MSUB at the time of her graduation to do so.

When Mary graduated from Broadus High as the Class Valedictorian, Girls Cross Country was not yet an option as a sport.

She commented on the growth of Cross Country in Broadus: "It's so cool to go to meets now and see the team from Broadus out there! Cross Country is such a great sport where you can push yourself to new limits and really see personal growth as an athlete, and I'm really glad to see that Broadus kids are getting the opportunity to have those experiences now, too."

Mary's hard work and dedication to the sport allowed her to grow as a runner, beginning with her humble beginnings in JH, on to placing high up in the rankings at the world famous Boston Marathon, and beyond.
