Steps for Charity – Just 2 more weeks!

March 24, 2022

Competition is fierce between the top Steps for Charity teams and just two weeks are remaining to get in those extra steps! The Labradors, the Powder River Pals, the Super Troopers and Otter Trotters all appear to be in the running for the top three spots.

Dancing at two proms is how Lea Aye, Happy Feet Two member, got her extra steps last week.

Karen Amende, Hit the Trails member, explained that she started doing yard work and making a real effort to walk more.

“I see Margaret Scoles, Team IOIA, out walking and I ask my wife, why she isn’t walking,” laughed John Olson, Team IOIA, “as I then get into my skid steer or jump onto the 4-wheeler.”

The charities highlighted this week are the Wildland Firefighter Foundation and the Powder River Trails.

The Walkathon Variant team, who are Lisa, Nancy and Andrew Gaskill and Rebecca Gratwohl chose the Wildland Firefighter Foundation because they have multiple family members that have and still do fight fires. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation’s mission is to help families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to assist injured firefighters and their families. The Powder River Trails, a sponsor of Steps for Charity, was chosen by several teams including:

Hit the Trails: Dina Gay, Marge Mader, Jeanne Rogge and Karen Amende.

The “J” Walkers: Julie Riley, Jerry Lei, John Amsden and Jackie Slovak.

Step Sistars: Barbie Hammerquist, Lindsey Albin, Connie Barnhart and Denni Schuetzle

Corner Store Walkers: Kurt & Cassie Copps, Joey Murdoch and Grayson Murdoch.

Corner Store Roadrunner Gang: Kris & Christy Mikesell, Brooke Aslip, and Kyla Hatch.

“We’re excited about having the trails to provide more walking options for our residents and visitors,” explained Hit the Trails team. Powder River Trails, with help from many volunteers, individuals and organizations built the Fit Trail north of town, created a walking map of Broadus, memorialized loved ones with beautiful benches around town and organizes the Steps for Charity, the 4th of July Freedom Run and Still I Walk event.

Walking is the best medicine according to Penn State Extension Service. If you want to sleep better, have more energy, boost your immune system or lower your blood pressure, strengthen your muscles or drop a few pounds, then start WALKING.

Steps for Charity members are WALKING, running, doing yardwork and dancing for their health and for their charities.
