AAU Wrestlers Compete At Home Meet And State Tourney

Earlier this month the Broadus AAU Mixer was held at the high school gym, with 31 Broadus wrestlers in attendance, competing against teams from Miles City and Colstrip. Broadus Coach Frankie Schoonover told us that Broadus kids wrestled in a total of 94 matches, and Miles City took the team trophy. Coaches handed out "Outstanding Wrestler" awards, which were won by Cooper Gardner, Myla Gatlin, and Trace Emmons.

Competitors for Broadus included: Monte Goggin, Brody and Blaize Reil, Cody Draine, Gunnar Pluhar, Trace Emmons, Mesa and Kreed Graff, Cort Fleming, Griffin Gardner, Baylor and Denver Kuhbacher, Trey Harmon, Hunter Stanton, Pruitt McDowell, Kordell Schonenbach, Brayden Stoddard-Terril, Thane and Mason Kolka, Rowdy Ryan, Clinton and Patrick Handran, Sophie Ostendorf, Myla Gatlin, Hazel and Reuben Kinzer, Tizer and Jesse Barnhart, Landon Williams, Charles Hartman, and Tyler Jurica.

On the 18th-20th of March, four Broadus AAU wrestlers competed at the state AAU tourney in Billings, including Reuben Kinzer, Monte Goggin, Myla Gatlin, and Hazel Kinzer. Monte Goggin placed in the top 12 in his 32 person bracket, while Myla and Hazel both won 2nd in their respective 70 lb Bantam and 75 lb Midget brackets.

In Myla's first match she lost to Teagen Wright of Headwaters Wrestling Academy by pin in 1:30.

In her second match, Myla beat Allie Ridgeway of Force 10 Wrestling Academy by a 6-2 decision. In the third place match, Myla beat Amelia Garrett, an unattached wrestler by a score of 10-2. In the second place match, Myla beat Mila Ryan of Shepherd by a 4-0 decision.

In Hazel's first match, she beat Lauryn Lindemann of Miles City by a 10-2 score. In her second match, Sydney Baird of Helena beat Hazel by a pin in 19 seconds. In the second place match, Hazel then pinned Andie Frieboes of Miles City in 2:35.

With the two second place wins, the two Broadus wrestlers won 35 points, for 29th place out of 54 total teams in the girls tournament. Glasgow won first in the girls tournament with 203.5 team points.

Monte Goggin, wrestling in the Bantam 60 lb class, beat Mason Smith of Shepherd in his first match, with a pin in 32 seconds, and that beat Wyatt Mahlum of the Rustler Wrestling Club by a 3-0 decision. In the quarterfinal, Murdock Pattison of Glasgow beat Goggin by pin in 2:59, and in his final match Monte was pinned by Silas Hessler of the Lincoln Loggers in 1:28.

Reuben Kinzer, wrestling at the Cadet 170 class, lost both of his matches, the first to Kaiden Dolan of the Mine Yard Dogs Wrestling Club and then to Tucker Shepardson, an unattached wrestler.
