Track Season Takes Off

April 14, 2022

The Broadus high school track team began their season last Thursday in Lockwood, at the flashy red Lockwood track.

“The team had a good meet to start the year,” commented Broadus Head Track Coach Jerry Coulter.

Conditions were mild for the Lockwood meet, with Zeason Schaffer kicking off her jumping season in fine form, winning 1st in the long jump and triple jump, and second in the high jump. Maddie Zimmer, competing for the first time in her high school career, won third in the high jump, while Sophie Irish won fourth in the event wearing a knee brace. The girls high jumping field looks promising for Broadus!

The Broadus girls team placed sixth out of seven teams with 38 points, while Red Lodge won the meet with 142 points.

For the boys, Jaxon Bilbrey had a great day, placing second in the 400 and fourth in the triple jump, and ran for third in the 4x400 relay, along with Matt Hansen, Eli Heacock, and Johnny Richards. Heacock won second in the 800 and third in the 1600, while Hansen won second in the 110 hurdles.

The Broadus boys team placed fourth out of seven teams, with 55.5 points, while Red Lodge won the meet with 151.5 points.

Three Broadus athletes are currently out with injuries suffered prior to the beginning of the season, and Zach Jones is now on the injured list after a broken elbow from tripping during the hurdle event at Lockwood. Coach Jerry Coulter still hopes to see all four athletes return this season to compete.

On Saturday at Baker, the team braved 20-30 mph winds to compete, and their performance lacked compared to Lockwood, perhaps because the team had only one day of recovery between the meets, and issues such as delayed onset muscle soreness (or DOMS), often rears its ugly head on the second day of recovery.

Eli Heacock placed 5th in the 800 to place highest out of the boys, while the boys 4x400 relays team again performed well, placing 2nd.

For the girls, Zeason Schaffer placed in the triple jump despite only jumping twice due to a muscle strain, and Sophie Irish placed fourth in the high jump with a 4’6” jump, matching her height and placing at Lockwood.

Track meets this, originally scheduled for Tuesday in Laurel and Thursday in Glendive, have been postponed or cancelled due to the winter storm.
