Broadus Track Competes At Hardin, Harlowton

Broadus Tracksters competed in two meets last week – the Hardin Invitational on April 26th and the Harlo/Park City Meet in Laurel on April 30th.

Despite the team's inability to practice on the home track over the past several weeks due to poor surface conditions brought on by the April storms, Broadus performed very well in Hardin, with individuals placing in many events and the relay teams also placing quite well.

The Broadus boys placed 3rd overall with 37 points, with Shepherd second at 49 points, and Hardin first at 103.5. The four lady strong girls team placed 4th out of 6 teams, with 13.5 points.

Jaxon Bilbrey won 1st in the triple jump, and 2nd in the 400 and high jump, and the boys relay teams ran record times in both events. Riggin Schaffer and Matt Hansen, the Broadus hurdlers, both placed in their events. Johnny Richards placed 2nd in both the 100 and 200 with fast times, and Tytan Hanson threw the discus over 104 feet for 2nd place.

For the girls, Zeason Schaffer continued her dominant performances in the triple jump, winning first there, and Abigail Martin placed 3rd. The 4x400 meter relay team of Schaffer, Martin, Maddie Zimmer, and Sophie Irish placed 3rd.

"It was a nice day," Coach Jerry Coulter said of the Hardin Meet. "The kids did well and we were glad to have some of our team back and healthy."

On Saturday in Laurel, a meet which would normally find Broadus to be competitive against Class B and C teams was different this time around, with Sheridan, Wyoming bringing three bus loads of kids to compete. With no limit on number of entries for events, the events took many heats to complete and stretched on longer than normal, and the Sheridan athletes dominated against the smaller schools. For instance, in the boys 100 meter race, 80 competitors were signed up to run. Sheridan won the girls team score with 182 points; the next closest team was Huntley with 63. For the boys, Sheridan put up 196 points, second place Columbus had 66.

Broadus athletes had a tougher time than usual at this meet, with few kids placing. Nonetheless, there were some bright spots such as Matt Hansen's personal record runs in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Josh Rasmussen knocked 24 seconds off his 1600 time, and 15 seconds off his 3200 time. Coulter said that Rasmussen currently has the fastest time in our district. Maddie Zimmer had PRs in the 200 and high jump, and Zeason Schaffer placed 5th in the high jump with a 4'8" jump.

This Thursday the team travels to their final meet of the regular season in Fairview. The meet originally scheduled for Saturday in Miles City has been rescheduled to next week, which will preclude Class B and C teams from attending due to being too close to the District Meet. The District Meet is scheduled for May 12th beginning at 10am in Baker.

Coulter spoke of the upcoming tournament: "We're looking pretty good for the meet in Baker. The kids are excited, and if we can keep everyone healthy we ought to do well."
