Bay Horse Beats Broadus in Baseball Game, Score 8-5

The Bay Horse baseball team felt themselves amply compensated Sunday afternoon for their long and tedious automobile trip to Broadus for they defeated the local team in a baseball game eight to five in six innings. The game was called on account of darkness. The visitors were about eight hours on the road with their three automobiles, experiencing delays caused by impassible roads, car and engine trouble. It was about 5 o’clock when they arrived here.

Broadus was not up to usual form and some costly errors were responsible for runs. Steel and McLain both pitched good games and the support accorded to each was overall equal.

The lineup for the game was as follows:

Bay Horse: Russell c, Mahoney rf, Dooley ss, Barlin lf, C. Cooley 1b, Steel p, Seele cf, Moore 3b, Blake 2b.

Broadus: Sherlock 1b, Cook 2b, Boyle 3b, R. McLain ss, Russell lf, Holt cf, Fisher rf, Culbertson c.

Calf Scramble a Success

One of the most exciting events at the Powder River County Fair was the calf scramble. The audience at the Livestock Sale would not think of leaving until witnessing this event.

Seven children participated in the calf scramble with three small calves turned loose in the arena to be caught by the youngsters. The determination and endurance of the three young 4-H’ers was comical to behold- on again, off again- and the first calf to be caught was by 10 year old Talonna Rossen. The other two calves were caught by Wayne Wetherelt, Jr. and Twila Olson.

The Powder River County Fair Board purchased the calves and the three participants catching them are to feed, care and show them at the 1973 Powder River County Fair.

New School Year Off To Smooth Beginning

The new school year got off to a smooth start county-wide, as anticipated, with the beginning of classes Monday morning.

“School got off to a good start. It went pretty smooth,” said Broadus Schools Superintendent Glen Mader, new at the helm of the facility. “I think we have a strong teaching staff and I think our kids are fortunate to have the strong teaching staff we have. I think we’ll see some positive things come out of this school year.”

Enrollment, however, is down a total of 19 students in grades K-12 at Broadus, which means increased numbers would be welcomed indeed by the October “official head count” by the state to determine ANB (average number belonging) payments for this fiscal year.

The first day enrollment, Mader said, was as follows: Kindergarten, 16 students; first grade, 25 students; second grade, 26; third grade, 25; fourth grade, 23; fifth grade, 30; sixth grade, 23; seventh grade, 28; eighth grade, 26; ninth grade, 39; tenth grade, 34; eleventh grade, 44; and twelfth grade, 38. That totals 168 students in the elementary building, 54 in junior high, and 155 in high school, bringing the grand total to 377.

This is down from last October’s count, Mader said, a total of 8 students in K-6, six students in junior high, and five in the high school.

County elementary enrollment is down too, as is the number of operating rural schools.

According to County Superintendent Charlotte Miller, Biddle has an enrollment of 14 students, South Stacey, five students, and Belle Creek, 12.

Billup and Horkan Creek Boards chose not to operate this school year, but kept the districts intact.

Last year, there were 39 rural students enrolled in five schools. That’s down eight students across the board.

New staff at the Broadus Schools, besides Mader as Superintendent, include Rosalie Vies, Broadus Elementary Principal; Lisa Lynch, Instrumental Music in both elementary and high school; Terri Gardner, Chapter 1; Ellen Plocek, Chapter 1 and Choral in both buildings; Bruce Sailer, Secondary Math; and Brad Snow, Secondary Social Studies.

The remainder of the certified staff are veterans of the local school system, with only three remaining as non-tenured.

Veteran teachers at the Elementary school and their assignments for the 1997-98 school year are: Paulie Isaak, Kindergarten; Diane Bogner and Sarah McGill, First Grade; Marilyn Emmons, Second-Third Grade split; Diane Smith, Second Grade; Roma Rogge, Third Grade; Derrick Tvedt, Fourth Grade; Marianne Hyatt, Fifth Grade; Dina Gay, Sixth Grade; Kay Brost, Librarian; Jerry Coulter, Physical Education, and Mary Washburn, Resource Room.

At the secondary building, veterans include Jim Hanson, Principal; Connie Barnhart, Art; Jesse Barnhart, Social Studies; Tony Tresch, English/Social Studies; Verna Brewer, Resource Room; Greg Childress, Biological Sciences; Jerry Coulter, Driver’s Education; Eldon Chapman, Guidance Counselor; Hilda Brimmer, Home Economics; Wanda Jamieson, Physical Sciences; Charlanne Lemke, Commercial; Meri Mainwaring, Commericial/IMC; Art Perleberg, Math; Paula Nisley, English; Steve Ray, Industrial Arts; Lynn Safranski, Physical Education; Marshall Williams, Metal Shop, and Kathie Cary, English.

Non-certified personnel at Broadus thus far include Darlene Wash, Clerk; Dar Thompson and Dixie Mitchell, Secretaries; Vernon Rice, Head Custodian; James Gorder, Assistant; Connie Robinson, Cook, and Kelly Babb, Resource Room Aide.

Serving on the Joint Board of School Trustees are Craig Randall, Chairman, Nina Schaffer, Bucky Billing, Leland Brimmer, Terry Powell, Dan Gaskill, Pam Nisley, Debi Fleming, and Denny Dunning.

At the county’s rural schools, veterans Mike Rollings and Laura Lambert have returned to Belle Creek, and Melissa Chevalier at South Stacey. New at Biddle are Judy Hessong, former Alzada teacher, and Alfred Preuett.

Finally, Tri-County staff includes Abby Jones, Itinerant Resource Teacher; Deb Linn, Speech Therapist; John Rush, School Psychologish; June Ray, Office Secretary, and Susan Smith, Speech Aide.
