Hawk Football Beats Lodge Grass

Edit 9/22/22: Game stats added.

The Hawk football team advanced to 2-1 on the season by beating Lodge Grass on Saturday, with a score of 50-22.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday but rescheduled to Saturday due to not being able to find refs for the initial Friday schedule. Broadus Head Coach Wyatt Williams told us that refs from Helena came down to officiate the game.

Changes in the Broadus offensive line from previous games provided better blocking for the Hawks, as Broadus went out to an early lead against the big, athletic Lodge Grass Indian team, with the Hawks leading 28-0 after the first half.

In the third quarter Broadus played their JV, and after a quick score to put Broadus up 34-0, Lodge Grass went on the attack, scoring 22 unanswered points against the youthful Broadus JV defense.

The Broadus Varsity came back in for the second half of the fourth quarter and finished out the game. The varsity defense gave up no points in the shootout.

Williams noted that Lodge Grass has a number of big, tall, athletic kids and could be a force to be reckoned with in coming years, with their passing offense and propensity to air the ball out down the field.

Wyatt commented on the excellent play of Jaxon Bilbrey with two rushing touchdowns, and Baylor Kuhbacher for his returns, one of which went in for a touchdown but was called back due to a penalty. Eli Heacock once again stood out on defense for the Hawks, while Landen Capp devastated the Lodge Grass offense from the defensive end position, and Colton Biesheuvel played a great game at Middle Linebacker.

This week Broadus will continue to hone their skills in practice as they look towards a conference game against Joliet for Homecoming on Friday. Joliet is 2-0 on the season and ranked third in the state as of last week, per 406mtsports rankings. Wil-liams told us that Joliet likes to run the ball, and plays a 2-3-3 defense which the Hawks will look to exploit in front of the home crowd.

Several Hawks are currently on the injured list including Paysen Kuhbacher and Jackson Knapp, as well as Kail Irish; all three are day to day as of Monday, and hope to return this week or in the near future.
