Hauling Culverts and Bridge Steel from Miles

Pete Whiting and Ira S. Patton on Tuesday delivered the first loads of bridge steel and corrugated culverts at the courthouse square in Broadus, hauling the road equipment from Miles City with teams and wagons. Perry Rolfe delivered another load on Wednesday and Albert Jesse and others are on the road with additional loads. It is stated that the original consignment to this county consisted of 30,000 pounds of bridge steel and 90,000 pounds of culverts. The freighters will receive $1.05 a hundred pounds, it is said. The trip from Miles City to Broadus with these heavy loads requires about four days.

Marion Hanson is Lady Pilot

Marion Hanson has recently joined the ranks for Private Pilots and to my knowledge is the only woman in Powder River County to hold a Private Pilot’s license. She took her daughter, Jackie, up for the first time this morning and Jackie’s only complaint was that the ride wasn’t long enough. Congratulations, Marion.

Hawks Pound Absarokee, 43-8

The Broadus/St. Labre Hawks pounded Absarokee, 43-8, on the home field Friday evening for their second win - and a fine one indeed - of the 1997 season. Hawks backs Lucas Dow and Ben Weber rushed for 235 and 105 yards, respectively, and two touchdowns each while quarterback Skyler Gali threw for another 102 yards and two additional touchdowns for a truly fine effort.

“The first half we didn’t play real well. We had seven turnovers but luckily they didn’t hurt us or cost us and we ended up being ahead by a large margin at half-time,” said Head Coach Lynn Safranski. “We played a real good second half. We had some real good efforts. Our offensive line played about as good as they’ve played all year. Lucas Dow had 235 yards rushing and Ben Weber had 105 yards rushing. Any time you have two running backs get over 100 yards in a game it’s a real good deal. Matt Borchgrevink had a good game both offensively and defensively.”

Skyler Gali completed 10 of 19 passes for 102 yards, two touchdowns and two PATs. He was picked once.

Borchgrevink caught five passes for 65 yards and two, two point conversions. Weber had two catches for nine yards and a TD. Tanner Miller caught one pass for 22 yards; Lucas Dow had a single reception for four yards, and Dice had a single two yard TD catch.

Dow picked up his 235 yards in only 12 carries, which took him into the end zone twice. Weber followed with 105 yards on 13 carries, scoring twice for the Broadus/St. Labre Hawks. Miller carried three times for 27 yards, and Mike Williams had 23 yards, also on three carries. Will Page had a single carry for an 11 yard pickup.

The Hawks were able to pick up 401 yards on the ground and another 102 yards in the air for a very impressive finish of 503 yards.

Meanwhile, the Hawk defense held Absarokee to 221 yards - 148 on the ground and 73 in the air. And, the defense was able to come up with five turnovers - two interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

The defensive points were quite well distributed. Page led the effort with one tackle and 16 assists, with Gali and Shawn Bright following. Gali finished with two tackles, seven assists and an interception, and Bright, a tackle and 12 assists. Just behind on defensive points were Roy Vernon with two tackles, six assists and a fumble recovery; Borchgrevink with a tackle, seven assists and a caused fumble, and Ray Randall with five assists, a fumble recovery, and a caused fumble.

Others on the defensive chart included: Shilo Capp, nine assists; Jake Gion, seven assists and a caused fumble; Coy Tinsley with six assists; Matt Hagedorn with two assists and an interception; Casey Curley with four assists; Doug Ullrich with four assists; Weber with three assists; Dow with three assists; and Dice, Dan McDowell, and Jesse Grant, two assists each.
