Shane Dunning Featured In Montana, The Magazine Of Western History
January 12, 2023
Powder River Examiner contributing writer Shane Dunning was recently published in the Winter 2022 edition of Montana, The Magazine Of Western History, a finely made quarterly publication put out by the Montana Historical Society.
Dunning's article, "The Geddes Murder Trials – Gender, Race, and Murder-for-Hire in Eastern Montana's Criminal Justice System" provides insight into the murder of Winnie Brown, not far off the Tongue River near Ashland in 1897. The story delves into a thoroughly detailed account of the story of Brown's murder, along with the complexities of race and gender in late 1800's Eastern Montana which set the stage for the trials of those accused of the murder. The overall story had previously been featured in Shane's Redshale Reflections column in our paper, in December of 2020 with "One of the Blackest Crimes to Ever Disgrace Eastern Montana", as well as "The Final Bow of Regina Geddes", from April of 2021. Both articles were written by Dunning.
Shane was previously published in Montana in the Summer 2021 issue, with his article on Charlie Thex and the Bear Creek Sheep Raid. Dunning is the 2022 winner of the illustrious Spur Award by the Western Writers of America in the Short Nonfiction category for that article, titled "The Right Man To Do A Wrong Thing".
Dunning's article is available for purchase via the Montana Historical Society's website; we also have a limited number of copies available for purchase at the Examiner office. Shane may be reached via his website: http://www.redshalereflections.com, and he's always on the hunt for future story ideas regarding the history of Southeastern Montana and Northeastern Wyoming.
