Bob Eccles to Fatten Cattle with Corn

Robert Eccles of the Cross ranch on Little Powder River, is experimenting with feeding his cattle corn before consigning them to market. Last week he shipped from Moorcroft about 500 head of mixed cattle, sending them to the feedlots of Seward, Neb., where they will be given rations of corn to increase their weight and improve their market value. It is said all these cattle are branded ED. They were trailed from Little Powder River to Moorcroft by Charles Scofield, George Straugh, Tom Daily and John Popp.

Bridge Assembled on New Site on Little Powder River

Under the direction of Road Supervisor Pat Higgins, the bridge in the Little Powder River which was left high and dry by a change in the river’s channel last spring, has now been moved to its new location about 200 yards farther up the river in the vicinity of the Cross ranch.

It was necessary to dismantle the bridge and reassemble it on the new site. The bridge has a 70-foot span and is 100 feet long with the aprons. The cement work in the foundation was competed by Sunday evening. Higgins and his crew of men have been employed with this work since the middle of October, though since that time there was about a month that they laid off on account of inclement weather conditions. The men had very few tools with which to perform the work and it became necessary for them to make their own pile driver and chop their own piling.

Hereford Register Shows Big Increase

More cattle were registered by the American Hereford Association in 1922 than in any other year since the organization was founded. The total number of Hereford registrations during 1922 was 108,430, or approximately seventeen thousand more than the registration by any other beef breed association.

Bowman Kills Two Wolves of Wright Creek

Of recent date, Mr. Bowman has killed two wolves on Wright Creek, after catching them in traps. Two other wolves are said to remain in that vicinity and it is said another wolf has been seen in the vicinity of Moorhead. Stockmen believe these wolves have come from Wyoming and should the number increase an uneasiness will be felt for a single wolf’s depredations among livestock in a year’s time is estimated at $1,000.

Warriors Beat Broadus Quint

The St. Labre’s Warriors from Ashland gained sweet revenge on the Broadus Hawks on the Hawk home floor, Tuesday, January 6, defeating them 34-32.

Coach Phil Langston started his second string against the fast breaking Warriors, who, incidentally, used only five men in the contest, but the speed and condition was too much for the slower Hawks.

Chris Mangen and Lee Harrsch got into the game long enough to score ten points for the evening.

In a preliminary contest, Coach J.S. Pratt’s Junior High team scrambled the dope, beating St. Labre’s J-High, 37-14. Pratt used all of eighteen men he had on the sidelines in an attempt to slow down the contest but his team kept up a steady flow of baskets, enough all the way to never leave the final outcome in doubt. Credit should be extended to the plucky Warrior quintet for making Broadus play always at peak of performance.

Starting for the “A” squad - Buzz Jones, Clarence Tipton, Clyde Farnes, Roy Wallace and Jerry Stabio. Substitutes - Lee Harrsch, Chris Mangen, Howard Smith, Joy Rogge, and Carl Mackaben. For the Warriors - Little Whirlwind, Standing Elk, Ament, and Pavek. Referees - McCurdy and MacBride.

Matmen Take First at Tournament

Broadus took first place in the B-C Division of the Cowboy Invitational Tournament in Miles City the past weekend. The twenty-two team tourney offered outstanding competition for the Hawk grapplers, according to Coach Haselhuhn.

Bill Wetherelt took the only championship at 98 lbs., dominating the weight class.

At 105 lbs., Cam Raulston won fourth place. Cam wrestled the best he has all year, losing to the champion, Owen, of Livingston in the semi-finals by riding time.

Craig Mader placed second at 155 lbs. Craig was a candidate for outstanding wrestler and most pins, but lost to Geurechit of Miles City who won both of the special awards.

Coach Haselhuhn and the team offer their thanks to Mr. Bob Mader for accompanying them to Miles City and helping with the chaperoning and to the cheerleaders for a job well done.

FHA Style Show

Tuesday, January 9, the Broadus High School FHA Chapter with the help of a few other students presented a style show. The theme of the show was Fashion Break-Through. Linda Janssen was the head of the committee which presented it, and she along with Julianne Minow, narrated the entire show.

DaLonda Turnbough was the voice of the computer which sat in the middle of the stage. Paper dolls were fed into one side of the computer with models coming out the other side. Models were FHA members, students from the grade school and high school, parents, and some pre-school children. The total number of participants was approximately 100.

The high school food’s class prepared the dessert which the 7th grade girls served while the show was in progress. Also during the show, the Folk singers of Broadus High School sang two of their numbers.
