Broadus Chills Out During Power Outage

February 2, 2023

A failed transformer at a Northwestern Energy substation resulted in a power outage across much of Southeastern Montana on Monday, including TRECO customers in and around Powder River County supplied by the Colstrip line.

The power went out around 8:30 AM, with temperatures in Broadus around -8. Generators at the courthouse were initially not running until repairs were made mid-morning, and a generator at the elementary school in Broadus was waiting on a part to be installed prior to the outage, so the schools had no power, as the high school generator is not yet operational. This meant that no lunches were available for students, and the call was made at 11:30 AM to send students home at noon.

Around 12:15 PM power was restored to Broadus, as residents gleefully warmed themselves and made sure their house pipes had not frozen during the outage. The warming temperatures th-roughout the day, light winds, and limited time of the outage seemed to be factors in limiting problems. We heard of some issues with stock tank water freeze-ups, but did not hear of house water freezing in Broadus.
