Letters To The Editor

February 16, 2023

As many of you know, my mother Ellen Gilger was placed in the care of the Powder River Manor in June of 2021 for end of life care. There were problems! I filed a complaint to DPHHS, and my allegations were validated. The inspection survey is a public document that can be viewed by all on the DPPHS website.

Ellen was neglected for at least 8 hours which directly resulted in bed sores. There were 4 major incidents. My brother visited mom and found her in an uncomfortable, precarious position in her chair. The call button was not accessible. It really appears that Ellen was left in that position intentionally as a punishment. On June 21, Ellen slipped out of bed and yelled for help, and no one came. She had to have laid there for 1-3 hours before she was rescued. Later that morning she was dropped by staff, and the incident note attempted to combine the two incidents into one. Accidents happen, but coverups are always intentional! Lastly, Ellen was given a suppository by a RN against the family's wishes, which caused Ellen severe discomfort and agony. She died later that night.

There are plenty of other shortcomings to discuss. I highly encourage everyone to pay more attention to the nursing home and talk to the county commissioners about all of the problems in regards to the nursing home. For the staff that did the best they could by my mother, Thank You!

Thank You for your time and consideration,

Truston Gilger
