More Northwestern Rumors

From the Miles City American

That the Northwestern will build from Belle Fourche, S.D., to Broadus and possibly to Miles City is the opinion of E.M. Wilson, editor of the Alzada Fairplay, who is in the city on business. Mr. Wilson states that there is considerable talk of the railroad in his part of the country and it is possible it will go up the valley to Alzada, although some believe the line will come only within five miles of the town. Mr. Wilson states that if the line is constructed it will undoubtedly benefit the Little Missouri valley, for the distance to the nearest point which would be this side of Alzada.

It is stated that the Homestake interests are behind the move and are going to offer the necessary inducements to insure the building of the road. This company owns extensive coal lands in the Broadus vicinity, says Mr. Wilson, and they want this extension to move the vast quantity of lignite coal to their mining plants in the Hills. As an inducement it is said the Homestake Company has offered the Northwestern railroad officials coal from their Broadus mines at a very low rate, less than a dollar a ton. Mr. Wilson is of the opinion that some surprising developments are expected to be made public soon.

Carlson Threw Heavy Opponent

Orv Carlson of Ekalaka won two out of three falls in the main event of the wrestling card at Gilmore’s Hall last Saturday night from Jim Blakesley of Spokane, Wash. Carlson weighed in at 185 lbs. while the Spokane grappler tipped the scales at 222 lbs. Carlson won the first fall utilizing a body scissors and wrist lock. Blakesley came back to win the second fall with a toe hold. The third fall was won by Carlson when Blakesley gave up while Carlson had him with a Boston crab hold.

Leonard Saye and Bob Miller wrestled to a draw in their semi-windup event. Saye weighed 180 lbs. for the match while Miller weighed 195 lbs. There was no fall in the first round of the match. Saye won the second round by pinning Miller’s shoulders to the mat following a body slam. Miller won the third round and the match was called a draw.

Ramona Carlson and Joan Anderson wrestled for 15 minutes to a draw in the ladies wrestling event. While the ladies wrestling was considered to be a novelty event, the ladies proved that it was no exhibition match by their willingness to mix it on the canvass. Each had a fair knowledge of wrestling holds and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout the match.

Gary Houser and Jackie Houser wrestled to a draw in the curtain raiser. The brothers have wrestled each other for several years. They are pupils in the Broadus grade school.

A large crowd of sports fans turned out to witness the first all wrestling match ever held in Broadus.

Orv Carlson, formerly of Broadus, was the promoter of the event. George Daniels was the referee in all four matches.

Stanley, Bilbrey Compete at Radisson Senior Classic

This past weekend, Broadus Hawk senior standouts David Stanley and Jiggs Bilbrey traveled to Billings to compete in the Radisson Senior Classic basketball event.

Jiggs and David were part of the Class B Team East, comprised of athletes from Broadus, Poplar, Plentywood, Malta, Forsyth, St. Labre and Baker.

Eastern B made a good showing despite their lack of height, losing the last two games by only six points. The high scoring and exciting games were a fine finish for the two athletes, who have devoted eight years to the local basketball program, fans reported.

David and Jiggs have been friends since the first grade, and have shared many early morning and late night trips to and from Broadus. From the outside hoop at Volborg to the Radisson Tournament, it has been a fine journey for the two outstanding young men.
