Coalwood Post Office to Close

The Coalwood post office will be closed as of April 30th, according to information from officials of the Miles City post office.

Mrs. John Gunther, clerk in charge of the office, has resigned her position and the post office department says the office will be closed as of that date. The Coalwood office is a rural branch of the Miles City post office. Mrs. Gunther took over the Coalwood office in December of 1964 and the facility has been a branch office since that time.

Mrs. Gunther said the Coalwood store is for sale but that everything is “up in the air right now” whether there is a buyer or not.

The Coalwood office served seven families with boxes and another seven families called for their mail there. These families will now be serviced out of the Volborg post office. The highway boxes will also be served out of Volborg.

Prior to 1964, Coalwood was a regular post office facility. Date the post office was established is not known.
