Powder River Extension Summer Ag Program

By PR Extension Office

Mark your calendars for the annual Extension Ag program scheduled for Tuesday, July 18th, 2023 at the Broadus Community Center beginning at 1:00 pm, according to MSU Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. Two private applicator credits will be available to attendees. The following topics will be discussed:

Water Quality for Livestock & People - Testing water for suitability for livestock and people will be presented by Dr. Adam Sigler, MSU Extension Water Quality Specialist. Adam will discuss toxic levels of TDS and Adam will demonstrate methods of testing water. In addition, he will address testing private wells for human health considerations and share county data.

Poisonous Plants with a Focus on Noxious Weeds - There are many poisonous plants in Eastern Montana, according to Amanda Williams, MSU Extension Carter/ Fallon County Agent. Knowing what affects these plants have on livestock can help managers keep an eye out on their livestock.

Understanding the life cycle of harmful plants and management options including mechanical, IPM and chemical can be beneficial. Many of the poisonous plants include weeds, both common and noxious.

Noxious Weed update in Powder River County – Focus on Ventenata

The distribution of Ventenata throughout SE Montana and specifically in Powder River County will be discussed by Weed Supervisor Tammy Van Tine. Early detection and control are essential to stop the spread of this invasive grass.

An update on control efforts on Ventenata from last summer will be shared.

Resources available through the Noxious Weed County program will also be discussed.

Contact the Extension Office at 436-2424 for more information.
