A cold, rainy morning couldn't keep determined runners from competing in the 4th of July Freedom Run held in Broadus last week. Overall, 29 people and two dogs ran or walked either the 1-mile, 3-mile or 5-mile races.

The 3-mile race was a new option for participants up for a little friendly competition and great physical activity to celebrate the 4th of July. Danny Johnson and Jen Bird were top winners in the 5-mile; Darren and Angela Thompson were the top winners in the 3-mile, and Brooklyn Worman and Jesse Barnhart topped the 1-mile.

Joan Jilka, who has run each the 31 years of the 4th of July Freedom Run, marked the routes for each race, and it was Joan's recommendation to add the 3-mile course, which brought more participants. Additional volunteers that made the Freedom Run a great success are Jerry Coulter, timer; Molly Lloyd and Vanna Byrd, registration; and Tammy Van Tine, Katie Ward, Karen Amende, Alyson Ragsdale and Abbey Butler, who provided direction and motivation for runners and walkers along the route. The Broadus Volunteer Fire Department members Clint Pedersen and Raymond Ragsdale made it safe for participants to cross the highway.
