Oct. 26 Meeting of Bean Growers

A meeting of all the bean growers of Powder River County has been called for 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, October 26, at Olive post office for the purpose of organization and pooling the bean shipments in effort to receive the highest market price.

The date of the meeting and its location was fixed by John A. Gaar of Kingsley post office, himself a grower of beans. Olive post office is centrally located in the bean-growing district of the county, and it is hoped the bean growers will show sufficient interest to attend and lay plans for the co-operative marketing of their beans instead of individual action as heretofore.

Mr. Gaar’s motives in calling the meeting are absolutely unselfish but are for the interests of other growers and he is to be commended for his foresight.

The price of beans in Miles City at the latest quotation was 5 ¾ cents but at the same time were wholesaling in Minneapolis at 10 cents. The carload freight rates on beans from Miles City to Minneapolis is 75 cents a hundred pounds, with a minimum of 30,000 pounds to the car. It is estimated that the bean crop from this county will total at least three carloads, or 90,000 pounds.

Mr. Gaar has a crop of 4,000 pounds of beans and has already been promised a market for them in this state at 8 cents a pound. He sees no reason why other growers should not receive the same price and for one he is willing and anxious to join a pool so as to secure a maximum instead of a minimum price for all the growers.

In the event the weather should be unfavorable on the date designed for the Olive meeting, the same would automatically be postponed to the following Friday.

Rains Make Alfalfa Seed Sprout on Heads in Field

The heavy rain of two weeks ago found a considerable acreage of alfalfa remaining uncut and with the subsequent cloudy weather the seeds started to sprout. G.W. Allen & Sons, the extensive alfalfa seed growers of Coalwood, were among those caught by this unseasonable occurrence. They had a big acreage planted to alfalfa and while they had threshed the big majority of their seed on what was left they will suffer better than a 50 percent loss. Their production is almost entirely Grimm registered seed, that threshed from one to four bushels to the acre and worth 40 cents a pound or better. The Allens have recently purchased a huller for threshing their alfalfa seed. It weighs 6,000 pounds and was hauled to Coalwood from Miles City by six horses. With this machine they would have completed the entire threshing job in two or three days longer before the rain started.

The same condition is reported with wheat that is growing in the stock in the fields.

Delayed Mine Blast Injured Beilage Miner

A delayed dynamite blast at the Beilage coal mine near Coalwood seriously injured Theron Leatherberry Sunday afternoon, H.R. Straiton, who took the injured man to a Miles City hospital said.

Two of the three shots placed in the mine apparently went off without detonating the third. Thinking that the third had also detonated, according to reports, Leatherberry reentered the mine only to have the delayed charge go off shortly after his entrance.

The Beilage mine is an underground operation.
