The Broadus Wrestling team traveled to the Hi-Line last week for the 28th annual Scottie Invitational, featuring 30 teams from Montana, many of which are teams Broadus wrestlers may see down the road at Divisionals.

Broadus had five of 12 boys attend the meet, and all five girls made the journey.

Raiden Aurand, at 138 lbs, was 1-2 at the Scottie Invite, and also won a match at the 2nd chance tourney. Schoonover said that Raiden is a tough kid who enjoys the battle, and is always looking to push the pace.

Kail Irish, also wrestling 138, was 2-2 and scored 8.0 team points at the main tournament, and also won a match in the 2nd chance. Schoonover said that Kail was under the weather early last week, so he bumped up to 138 in order to hydrate and heal. He still performed well against bigger opponents, and showed some places where at 132 lbs he could use his strength but now needed to rely on technique. In other words, showed some places where he could improve when he drops back down.

Riggin Schaffer, at 152 lbs, was 5-1 in the tournament, and placed 3rd. Riggin scored 21.5 team points.

"At Sidney last week Riggin had a tough couple matches and lost out early, so here I told him to just go out and do his thing, and he had a great match. When he wrestles matches his way, Riggin is tough to beat, and he showed it at Glasgow," Frankie said of the Senior Hawk wrestler.

Collin Weatherell, at 160, was 0-2 in the Scottie, but pinned one opponent in the 2nd chance. "Collin has been trying to cut weight to 152 but didn't make it. He's a mature kid for being a Freshman, and saw some tough opponents. He'll improve with experience," Schoonover noted.

Reuben Kinzer, wrestling at 205, was 4-2 at the Scottie and placed 4th. Reuben scored 20.0 team points. "Reuben did well at Glasgow, and dominated the matches he won, but seemed to wrestle not to lose in some matches and it cost him. One thing I say is "wrestle to win, not to not lose," and that means staying aggressive as it's tough to win on defense."

In the Girls 126 lb division, Macyn McDowell was 2-3 in her first tournament, placed 6th, and scored 10.0 team points. Macyn drew a tough opponent in her first match, and was eventually given a warning for being too aggressive. Schoonover told her that now she knows where that line is drawn, to take a step back but continue to be aggressive, and she proved it by winning two matches.

Aspen Alderman, at 132, won 2 of 3 and placed 8th, and scored 8.0 team points. She also wrestled in the 2nd chance tourney, pinning two opponents. The head coach commented "Aspen was sick earlier in the week, but she is a tough young lady and fought from behind in several matches to win."

At 138 lbs, Bonita Kinzer went 2-2 in the Scottie and placed 4th and scored 14.0 team points. In the 2nd chance tourney she lost one match. "Bonita wrestles tough, and is a coachable young lady. She did really well at Glasgow," her coach commented.

Novalee Blakeman was 0-3 in the girls 165, placing 6th and scoring 3.0 team points. Novalee has been trying to drop a weight class but didn't get it done last week, as the determined young lady learns to improve in practice and on the competition mats.

Aspen Krantz was 2-2 in the girls heavyweight division, placing 4th and scoring 14.0 team points. She also pinned an opponent in the 2nd chance tourney. "Aspen had a great tournament," Schoonover said: "She wrestled phenomenally in her match Friday against Josephine Manning of Fort Benton, where Aspen applied her skillset in order to win."

The Broadus boys had 49.5 points in the tournament, and the Broadus girls 49.0 points. Sidney won the boys tourney with 224.5 points, and Baker won the girls with 172.5 points.

"Overall as a team I feel we performed well, but we didn't see the improvement over the previous tournament I'd like to have seen," Schoonover said. "That tells me we need to adjust some things this week in practice for Huntley."

The Huntley Meet will feature a number of teams from around the Billings and SE Montana area, including larger schools from Billings, but also teams like Shepherd and Columbus that Broadus will see at Divisionals.
