Broadus Sending Eight To State

February 8, 2024

Reuben Kinzer was the 205 lb Champ at the Eastern BC Divisional.

"That was the best divisional tournament I've coached," proclaimed Broadus Head Wrestling Coach Frankie Schoonover, when he stopped by for an interview on Monday afternoon, describing the Hawks' tournament in Wolf Point last weekend.

"The team wrestled beyond their forecasted capabilities; they truly rose to the occasion," he said.

With 10 wrestlers from the boys and 5 girls wrestling in Wolf Point, Schoonover took the largest team he's sent to divisionals, and came away from the weekend with 8 wrestlers headed to state, the largest his teams have brought to the Metra.

On top of that, Broadus had two divisional champs – Reuben Kinzer at 205 lbs, and Aspen Krantz at 185 for the girls. The last time Broadus had a divisional champ was 2013, with Jess Lockwood.

Schoonover commented: "The team as a whole were disciplined throughout the weekend, and they were incredibly supportive of one another. When Hunter Stanton had his first win of his high school career, the entire Broadus team came unglued, cheering from the stands. It's fun to be a part of that kind of a team."

Broadus had multiple wrestlers in a position over the weekend, with Kail Irish, Jackson Knapp, AJ Schoenbeck, Collin Weatherell, and Novalee Blakeman winning matches in do or die situations.

"When you get an opportunity for that one shot to move on to the next level, and you take advantage of it, that's an amazing feeling," Schoonover said.

Broadus had three wrestlers miss going to state by only one position, and another by two positions. Kail Irish beat Raiden Aurand in the 7/8th place match to determine which wrestler would continue to state. With so many members of the team in close contention for a state berth, the team is looking poised and ready for next season – even for those who won't walk the mats at the Metra.

As a team, Broadus boys placed 6th with 97 points, which was the most points for a class C team in the tournament. Huntley won the meet at 300.5 points with 16 wrestlers. There were 21 teams total in BC boys.

Broadus girls placed 7th with 53 points. Baker won with 217 points (13 wrestlers compared to 5 for Broadus). 21 teams competed in the girls competition.
