Steps For Charity Challenge - Week 5

Stepping up for Health

By PR Extension Office

“I’ve improved my blood pressure numbers” reported Randy Sullivan, member of Hit the Trails, who discussed the benefits of doubling her steps in the Steps for Charity Challenge.

“I wish I was 80,” explained Ira Roadifer, Powder River Let’um Walk team member. A true competitor, Ira was strategizing how to make his steps count more.

“Is James still sitting?” Maddy Reierson, Team Grandma’s Going Down, asked about her Uncle James, Team Jacam Joggers, as she marched in place after running up and down the hillside to outpace her uncle.

The Powder River Senior Center is a charity chosen by the Happy Hoofers and includes Bert Farnes, Vanna Byrd, Jackie Walden and Jay Neimen. Jay’s good friend Randy Sullivan encouraged him to make his steps count and register for the Steps for Charity Challenge.

The Powder River Senior Center is an inviting place to gather, visit with friends, play cards, exercise, craft, play Bunco, learn how to cook with an air fryer or practice yoga thanks to Director Tammy Jackman, who creates, manages and organizes the welcoming space for all ages. Check out the schedule on the Powder River County Senior Center Facebook page. Tammy also organizes day trips to area events including Shakespeare in the Park held at Poker Jim Butte each summer. The Powder River Senior Center is also a space that hosts Linda Wolfe, SHIP Counselor for Action for Eastern Montana, who assists seniors on Medicare or Medicaid and Social Security. To schedule an appointment with Linda or find out more information about how the Senior Center can meet your needs, call Tammy at 406-436-2635.

The Broadus Food Bank is housed in the Powder River Senior Center, where anyone and everyone has access to healthy, nutritious and affordable (FREE) food. The Red Hot Chili Steppers, sponsored by Teen 4-H, chose the Food Bank as their charity. Members include Justin Aye, Aiden Roberts and Darren and Kade VerWolf.

Another charity that provides food for people living with food insecurity is the Kids Food Bag Foundation. The Hudson Hikers team chose this charity. The members are Hudson, Ashley and Tammy Van Tine and Liz Riter. They picked this charity because it sends children home with back packs of food to help feed them and their families on weekends.
