The Inaugural Rolling Hills Junior Golf tournament was held last weekend, put on by Chad and Cynde Jo Gatlin, along with Pete Wenzel. The tournament, which featured 24 players between ages 6 and 15, followed a season of Friday practices. For many of these young golfers, this was their first year of picking up a club. Pete Wenzel said the progression of some of the golfers over the season was quite amazing, noting that they really picked up and learned the game quickly. The game of golf was not the only lesson to be learned, as for some of the younger golfers, important life skills such as patience were part of the lesson. For example, learning to wait one's turn to tee-off.

Earlier this spring, the coaches received a $500 grant from the Montana State Golf Association for the program. These funds, according to Wenzel, went towards buying clubs and other supplies, as well as towards trophies for the tournament.

Pete mentioned that the tournament, as well as the season was a great success, and most importantly, the kids had a lot of fun.

Excellent coaching goes a long way towards starting a beginner in the right direction; Pete and Chad provided the excellent coaching needed to ensure the kids started correctly. A variety of other folks helped out during the season. Pete spoke: "I'd like to thank Cynde Jo Gatlin for all her help. Thanks to Tyler Gardner for his cooking, and thanks to Troy Amsden for his help."

Another season of golfing, as well as the possibility of an expanded tournament, are planned for next year.
