    A series of lengthy, long lingering ice jams continued to clog up Powder River over the week. As we reported last week, an extended ice jam of over 10 river miles in length extended from just past the mouth of Rough Creek upstream.     Marjorie Hanes, age 94, passed away at the Powder River Manor on March 16, 2023. Marjorie Louise (Rice) Hanes was born to Frank Rice and Frances Hayward Rice on May 20, 1928. She grew up in Powder River County, Montana. Frank and Frances ranched along the Powder River south of Broadus, MT. She and a sister, Doris Jean, lived at the ranch but then moved into Broadus to attend school – still spending summers at the ranch.     Ellis I. Richards, 86, passed away at his home in Gillette, WY on March 19, 2023. Ellis was born February 6, 1937 in Ridge, MT to William "Clyde" and Geraldine (Malley) Richards. He joined the US Army with service from 1956 through 1959, stationed at Anchorage, Alaska. After discharge from the Army, Ellis married Lois West; and two children were born to this union.     HELENA –Hunters have until April 1 to apply for deer and elk licenses, but they shouldn’t wait for the last minute. Get it done now. Hunters who are applying for special licenses and permits need to have a valid email address. Hunters can apply for permits on the FWP website.     By Gina Vineyard Powder River First Responders received a $3,000 grant from the Powder River Community Endowment Fund and with matching funds of $3,000 from Powder River First Responders we were able to replace 5 AEDs that were obsolete and unable to purchase supplies for an update.
